Our clients are continuing to do big things in and around Detroit. Each month we will be highlighting one client and their impact in the community....

Katie keeps her days full between a busy family life with two boys and a career that demands her full attention. Her dedication to both is unmatched. Finding time for her personal health and fitness is no doubt challenging but she has continued to find a way to make it work.

Here is a bit more about what she does to help the people of Detroit....

"I am a Managing Attorney at the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO). SADO provides representation to people who appeal their state court criminal convictions and cannot afford counsel. Most of my clients are incarcerated in prisons across the state, and I appear on their behalf in Michigan's trial courts, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and the Michigan Supreme Court. I have been at SADO for ten years and now lead a team of appellate defenders. The work is hard. The hours can be long. We often lose and are almost daily confronted by the injustice suffered by our clients at the hands of the police, courts, and prosecutors. Yet, there is no place I'd rather be. I feel incredibly lucky to do this work. Every day I get to find and champion the good in people, collaborate with talented and brilliant people, and work to shape the law and reform the criminal legal system.

I started working out at PT in the D almost exactly four years ago. My youngest had just turned one, and I was ready to focus on my health and fitness. Robert helped me build strength and designed workout routines that accommodated my injuries and health needs. While I started working out to get more physically fit, the greatest benefit of my PT in the D workouts is that they help me find balance and manage stress. Throughout the pandemic I have been working out virtually from my home gym (it's really just the kitchen). These workouts have kept me sane and healthy. Still, I miss going to the gym midday, talking Robert's ear off, and throwing the medicine ball at the wall. I look forward to getting back there soon."
